20th Anniversary Fundraiser a Huge Success: Now at over two times our Goal

In the past year heads rested upon pillows 37,024 times at Albany Helping Hands.  That’s an average of 101 persons in the shelter every night of the year. A lot of wear and tear on beds and mattresses.

“Most of the mattresses were here when I arrived almost nine years ago” stated Oakes, “One Hundred-six mattresses are now in need of replacement.”  To meet the need Albany Helping Hands is launching a special 20th Anniversary Fundraiser during the month of September 2018 with the goal to raise $20,000.

Guest  Sleeping Upgrades

In the summer of 2015 out of the 100 plus mattresses in use, 20 replacements were purchased then according to Wayne Oakes, Assistant Executive Director.  With our census being close to full capacity of 110, the need is for at least 106 institutional quality replacement mattresses.

In December 2015 Albany Mennonite Church members organized a special spaghetti feed fund raising event at their church to raise money to replace all the old wooden bed frames with institutional heavy-duty metal frames. The church members raised a significant portion needed and the funding gap for the bed frame replacement was filled in January 2016 when the First United Methodist Church and the community stepped up to fill the remaining need.

The bed frame purchase and replacement were completed in September 2016. This was followed by further improvements in the sleeping area; replacement of guest storage shelving and the painting of the dormitory.  The current need is to replace the mattresses with instutional duty mattresses

Looking back, it is worthy to note Executive Director Pastor John Leon’s words in his web blog about last year’s anniversary, “The significance of such an occasion cannot go unnoticed because it was then the mission of Albany Helping Hands began its expansion.”

Pastor John stated further, “Without question, God has blessed our mission here in Albany.  So, it is during this month of September we want to take the time to remember, as well as celebrate our small beginnings.”
