Hot Meal Needs Falling

For the first time since June 2017 the annual (12 month rolling total) count of meals served has fallen below 82,000 meals a year (see Graph 1 above).

The need for food count peaked at 88,051 hot meals a year in for the period February 1, 2017 - January 31, 2018.

Then for the remainder of 2018, the count was above 86,000 meals over the rolling 12 month period. 2019 has seen a decrease in need with the annual total 81,898 for the latest reporting period August 1, 2018- July 31, 2019. The trend for the past 12 months reflecting this drop is noted below in graph 2.

The Month to Month meal count totals are shown below. The black dot shows total meal count for each month. The red line represents the Monthly Average Count over the 12 month rolling period.

Emergency Shelter: Since December 2017 the shelter has been close to full capacity providing over 36,000 bed nights of housing annually. Below’s graph (#4) shows the meal count data and the Annual Bed Night totals.

Annual Bed Night totals are the number of beds filled each night totaled for the 365 day period.

This statistic is the total for a rolling 12 month period. The latest report noted 81,898 meals served over the twelve month period from August 1, 2018 - July 31, 2019.  The Bed Night totals are illustrated by the dotted red line. The scale is on the right side of the graph ranging from 28,000 to 38,000 bed nights per year. This statistic is the total for a rolling 12 month period. The latest housing census report noted 36,627 bed-nights provided over the twelve month period from August 1, 2018 - July 31, 2019.  Note: The Housing totals (Bed Nights) DO NOT include those living in transitional housing (located next to shelter) or Single Mothers with Children living at the  Bailey Home .

Table 1: Albany Helping Hands Meals Served

Data Content Key:    

  • Column 1 - Month Reported

  • Column 2- Monthly Meals. Total Meals served for reporting month

  • Column 3- 12 Month Rolling Total. Total number of meals served over previous 12 month period ending on last day of reporting month. For example, 83,228 meals for period August 1 2016 to July 31, 2017.

  • Column 4- 12 Month Rolling monthly average. The monthly average for the 12 month rolling period (above). The 83,228 meals annually, divided by 12 is an average meals served per month, 6,936

  • Column 5- 6 Month Rolling Total. Total number of meals served over previous 6 month period ending on last day of reporting month. For example, 43,2918 meals for period February 1, 2017 to July 31, 2017.

  • Column 6 - 6 Month Rolling monthly average. The monthly average for the 6 month rolling period (above) is 7,215.

  • Column 7- 3 Month Rolling Total. Total number of meals served over previous 3 month period ending on last day of reporting month. For example, 21,170 meals for period May 1, 2017 to July 31, 2017.

  • Column 8- 3 Month Rolling monthly average. The monthly average for the 3 month rolling period.

Color Coding Key:

Column 2 (Monthly Meal Count). Bar graph relative to reported count.

Column 3 - 8 (Rolling Averages) Each column of data is coded by color according to the rolling (12 month, 6 month, 3 month) count.

Lowest to highest are: green, light green, yellow, orange, red, and dark red.  

For example, in the Average Annual Rolling column we see data for January 2017 we see green, reflecting the lower level. By January 2018 we see the red coded key, noting the high meal counts for those months.

(Graph 5) The 3 month rolling average shows the Monthly Meals Served over the last three months.  For the latest 3 month period (May - July 31, 2019 the average hot meal service count was below 6,000 (5,986).meals.

The chart above ( Graph 6) tracks the month to month hot meal service count (black line) with monthly totals.  The red line is the 12 month rolling count of the monthly average.
