Here it Comes: Another Blast of Heat

By:  Jim Willhight

Here is this morning's special weather statement from the National Weather Service:

Brief Period of Hot Temperatures This Week

High pressure will build over the Pacific Northwest this week. Temperatures will be very warm and become hot as dry offshore flow develops Monday and strengthens Tuesday. Tuesday will be the warmest day of the week as most areas will reach the upper 90's with some local 100's possible. The offshore flow weakens Wednesday but only expect a few degrees of relief until Thursday when onshore flow and somewhat cooler marine air returns.

Additionally...easterly winds may bring smoke from the Cougar Creek fire near Mount Adams and the County Line fire complex at Warm springs to the west side valleys. It`s difficult to say just how thick smoke may get but those with breathing difficulties may want to begin preparations for a couple days in a closed indoor environment.

Finally...hot temperatures and very dry humidity will produce conditions ripe for wildfire spread. Please avoid any outdoor burning over the next several days and take care to avoid any careless actions such as throwing away burning materials. Also...ensure recreational vehicles and power tools are in proper working order with fully functional spark arresters. Take great caution while parking vehicles on dry grasses. Campers should stay up to date on campfire restrictions.

Cooling Center Status:  The Albany Helping Hands Cooling Center is expected to remain open through the week . Thursday and Friday are expected to cool to the lower 80's but will increase to the upper 80's for the weekend (August 22 and 23rd).
